- Live in a Tribal Village, Beside the Periyar Tiger Reserve
Destiny The Farm Resort
Spice Village, Thekkady
At this 12-acre resort, the nature-cooled cottages wear thatched roofs made of locally sourced elephant grass and stone floors with coir mats. The campus is a chemical-free zone that’s home to guinea fowl, squirrels, birds and butterflies.

Spice Village is the essence of a mountain tribal village, re-imagined for the modern independent traveler. This is a tribute to ancient ways of life.
Curling around a misty ridge 2,000ft high in the Periyar vastness, there was a ranger's home, with fruit trees, rare herbs and a profusion of flowering plants that has been converted into this resort. Of course, the comforts of a modern hotel exist, but they never intrude. Modern plumbing, comfortable beds and hot showers find their place, but in a setting stripped down to its natural essence.
The neighboring Periyar Tiger Reserve is ideal for jungle walks and boat rides to spot elephants, gaurs, deer, otters and foxes, apart from tigers.
Hewn stone replaces shag carpets. Birdsong takes the place of television. Air-conditioning is unnecessary because of the mountain climate. And of course, you will want to take in the heady scents of spice wafting through the air.
Organic vegetables and spices are grown in-house. The outdoor restaurant sources all the ingredients within this radius to reduce carbon footprint.

The Fine Art of Cooking With Spices
The rattling top of a village bullock cart – that’s the real India. The one in this farm is a somewhat kinder version, with better tyres and a suspension. Watch the hilly countryside slowly drift by to the slow clip-clop of hooves and the ringing of the cow bell. It makes you feel like you've left the 21st Century behind.
